Help and common questions
How much does Hey Tolly cost?
Nothing. It is free, there is no advertising in it, and there is nothing to buy. It is made by Carma, who build tolling and carpool technology, and we would rather be useful to drivers than charge them.
Where do the prices come from?
Every rate is read from the toll operator’s own published page, and each card shows you which page and when we last checked. If an operator does not publish a price, Hey Tolly says so rather than guessing — an unpriced road that admits it is more useful than a confident wrong number.
Why won’t it tell me the price of an express lane?
Because nobody publishes it. Express lanes like the TEXpress lanes around Dallas–Fort Worth set their price by how full the lane is, recalculated every few minutes, and the only place the real number appears is the overhead sign before you enter. Hey Tolly shows the published range and tells you to read the sign, because that is the honest answer. You pay the rate on the sign when you enter, even if it changes while you are in the lane.
A price looks wrong. What do I do?
Tell us — this is the most useful message we get. Email support@gocarma.com with the road and what you were actually charged. Rates change and operators redesign their websites; a driver who was there beats our last crawl every time.
Can it work out what my trip will cost?
In the app, yes, for the markets where we hold enough geometry: give it a start and an end and it totals the toll points along the way. Where a route uses a dynamically priced lane it will say so rather than invent a figure for it.
What is a toll statement for?
If you share the statement your toll agency sends you, Hey Tolly reads it on your phone and checks each charge against what we publish for that place. It is the quickest way to find a charge that should not be there. The file never leaves your device — see the privacy page for exactly what happens to it.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up, no password and no email required to use any of it.
Which states does it cover?
In the United States, all of them that have tolls — 34 states plus Puerto Rico, and every tolled facility in the federal census that has a published price. A handful of small private roads publish nothing at all, and Hey Tolly names them rather than pretending.
Does it cover Ireland?
Yes — all twelve tolled roads, from the M50 and the Dublin Port Tunnel to the PPP schemes on the M1, M3, M4, M7/M8, N6, N8, N25, the Limerick Tunnel and the East Link. Every rate is read from Transport Infrastructure Ireland’s own published tables and shown in euro. Irish tolls change on 1 January each year, so the date on each card matters more than usual.
Is it available on Android?
Not yet. The web version works on any Android phone today, and an Android app is being built.
I work for a toll agency
Then the most useful thing you can do is tell us where we are wrong. There is more on what we would like from agencies, and what we would build with them, on the agencies page.
How do I reach a person?
Email support@gocarma.com. It is read by the people who build Hey Tolly, not by a ticket queue, and we answer.
